Imagine the smell of comfort food, reminiscent of dishes prepared by our grandmothers with love. The visuals are a mix of family history and creative decor, complemented by the warmth of a friendly welcome, and the sound of authentic, traditional dishes being cooked. This is the sensory experience awaiting you at Osteria del Matto. Here, you are immersed in the hospitality of siblings Alessia and Filippo, alongside their mother, Santina.
Upon arrival, the unique façade catches your eye with its creative display of plants, art, and an authentic sign. Two other signs immediately stand out: one reading “cucina casareccia,” emphasizing their homemade cuisine, and another, “menù fisso,” noting their 25-euro fixed menu, a tradition since their opening in 1999.
The eclectic decor, curated by Filippo, blends framed photographs, masks on the walls, hand-painted chairs in various styles, and alternative lighting sources, all creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. When Filippo realized I was Brazilian, he proudly brought out a guitar autographed by Brazilian singer Marisa Monte, who dined there alongside Caetano Veloso several years ago.
Curious about their choice of a fixed menu, I asked Alessia, who explained two main reasons: their intimate space and the home-style cuisine. Osteria del Matto was always meant to evoke the feeling of being at home, a sentiment that truly resonates as the restaurant comfortably seats no more than thirty guests. Their fixed menu, crafted around the freshest available ingredients, is a reflection of Santina’s generous approach to cooking. Dining here feels like arriving at your grandmother’s house, where you sit at her table and share a variety of dishes served straight from the kitchen.
During our meal, we shared on our table an entrée of chicken, bread with vegetables, sausage, fried zucchini flowers, pork, grilled tomatoes, and finished with a mouthwatering plate of freshly made pasta.
Osteria del Matto is a hidden gem, brimming with history and a homey vibe. Alessia shared that their simple goal is to leave a lasting impression on everyone who visits. I can say without hesitation that I left with the concept of “simply delicious food” firmly stamped on my heart.
