The Way of the Gods: A journey between history and nature on the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines
An ancient route that joins Bologna and Florence through the Apennines, among woods, paths and traces of the past: this is the Via degli Dei, a path about 130 km long that connects Piazza Maggiore in Bologna with Piazza della Signoria in Florence. An itinerary immersed in nature, which gives emotions at every step and allows you to discover breathtaking landscapes, historic villages and ancient paved streets.
A path between history and nature
The Way of the Gods owes its name to the peaks it crosses, such as Mount Adone, Mount Venere and Mount Luario. This ancient communication route was already used by the Etruscans to connect Felsina (the present-day Bologna) with Fiesole, and then it was perfected by the Romans, who built the Military Flaminia, still visible today in some sections with its original basolato. During the Second World War, the area was the scene of battles along the Gothic Line, leaving traces still present in local stories and monuments.
Walking or cycling: an experience for all
The path is divided into stages, which can be modulated according to one’s abilities. Generally, walkers take between 5 and 7 days to complete the route, while cyclists, thanks to variants suitable for mountain bikes and gravel, can travel in 2 or 3 days. For those who choose the hike, the Via degli Dei offers an alternation of dirt roads, mule tracks and stretches of Roman road, with numerous accommodation along the way, ideal to stay overnight and taste local cuisine.
Places not to be missed
Along the way you will encounter natural wonders and sites of great historical charm. Among the most suggestive stages we find the nature reserve of the Pliocenico Contrafforte, with its imposing rock formations, the Trebbio Castle, built by Cosimo de’ Medici, and the Sanctuary of Monte Senario, a place of spirituality and breathtaking views. Arriving in Florence, with its unique artistic and cultural heritage, is the worthy conclusion of a journey that leaves its mark.
A path for the territory
In recent years, the Way of the Gods has contributed to the rebirth of the Apennine villages, generating new tourist opportunities and promoting a slow and sustainable tourism. Every year, thousands of hikers choose this route to rediscover the connection with nature and history, in a journey that is not only a physical challenge, but also an experience of growth and reflection.
Whether for sport, culture or the pleasure of exploring, the Way of the Gods is a unique adventure, able to give authentic emotions and a deep sense of connection with the territory.
